Use ‘la’ if feminine noun appears to be singular and abbreviate it to ‘l’’ if the noun begins with a vowel. If the noun is a plural then use ‘le’.

Use ‘il’ if masculine noun appears to be singular and its plural as ‘I’. Also, use ‘lo’ for vowels and ‘gli’ for masculine noun begins with vowel, impure s(a consonant after the ‘s’) or z. Abbreviation of ‘lo’ can be seen as ‘l’’ if the word is beginning with a vowel.

For indefinite articles:

Use ‘una’ before all nouns that are feminine, but ‘un’’ before vowels.

Use ‘un’ before all nouns that are masculine, including vowels, except that ‘uno’ is used before impure s or z.
