Disjunctive Pronouns

Posted in |

Pronouns that are used independently, that mean they are used apart from the verb are called disjunctive pronouns. They are pronouns which lay emphasis or may follow prepositions. They are found in a statement or an exclamation.

me Noi
te Voi
lui/lei loro

Vengo con te – means I’ll come with you.

Amo te, non lui – means – I love you, not him!

Fortunati voi! – means you are so lucky!

These are basically used to lay emphasis on a certain person, object or animal. The reasoning behind this is to show fervour and highlight certain points with regards to the object of the sentence. This may be used in the negative form as well. When used in the negative form, care must be taken to take note and pay heed to the fact that it is not always that the position of the verb will remain the same, as there are a few irregulars.
