Italian Prepositions

Posted in |

Prepositions are words or phrases that are typically placed before the substantive and showing a relation of the substantive to an adjective or a verb. Prepositions come in very handy to show a relation between two completely different objects. Take for example:

The ball is on the table : The preposition ‘on’ shows the relation between the ball and the table.

The nine prepositions, mainly, are placed in the order :

di - of

a – to/at

da - from

in – in

con - with

su - on

per - for

tra - between/among

fra - between/among

Nowadays, In Italian there hardly any difference between fra and tra (former: "among", the latter: "between"). They are nearly interchangeable because the rule euphony comes into picture: tra fratelli (among brothers) and fra i tralicci (between the power pylons).

Intorno - Around

accanto a - Beside

parte – front

vicino - near

opposto – opposite

dietro – behind

sopra – above
